  • Prado 120 Series Fuel filter housing / primer pump failure

I have recently had issues with fuel starvation in my 2004 Prado (1KZ-TE engine). Driving at light throttle showed no issues, but with more pedal depression , the engine would lose power and the Check Engine light would come on.

After spending big bux at a shonky mechanic, on a reconditioned IP and no improvement, I took the Prado home and thought about the symptoms. I used an electric fuel transfer pump (gear pump) to pull fuel thru the filter. To my surprise, a lot of air bubbles were seen in the clear hose on the outlet side of the fuel transfer pump.
I believe that the primer diaphragm has a leak, allowing air into the fuel line going to the IP.
I bought a second hand filter housing / primer pump on ebay and it arrived today.
I removed the old housing and installed the new (used) one.
A short test drive was extended to allow longer runs at full throttle, up to the 110KmH speed limit going up hills with NO fuel starvation.
Now to contact Consumer Protection to recover the $5K+ that the shonky dealer charged me for a reconditioned Injector pump, with no improvement in the symptoms I demonstrated to him.

I will also seek a mechanic to demonstrate the air leak in the Filter housing.

I have lost any vestige of trust in that local mechanic!
Life is a journey, with problems to solve, lessons to learn, but most of all, experiences to enjoy.
