Hey everyone,
First post here. First real port of call on the topic. Thanks for being patient with a complete Noob to SVO/WVO world.
I am going to be taking my fiancé and two young kids on an overland journey around Australia, through Indonesia onto Nepal and the ‘Stans with a rough final destination of Ireland or Scotland - just trying to give a bit of context to the adventure - ie. the vehicle needs to be solid.
The journey is for an art project, and the veggie conversion is (99%) essential to the project - I know it’s impractical. I’m not expecting to travel the entire way by wvo, but I’d like to offset good chunks of my fuel consumption with wvo.
I know there’s going to be a million challenges and hurdles to overcome, but to be honest I’d prefer not to delve into them all here (one step at a time right?), but I would love it if anyone could shed a little light on which vehicle would be best suited to veggie oil conversion?
Here’s my general hopes for a vehicle (although I’m aware we have to compromise on some points):
The dream vehicle would be one of the light commercial 4x4’s such as the Iveco Daily or an Isuzu NPR, but the little I know about VO conversions is that the older simpler motors are much better suited. Does anyone know if it’s possible to convert an Iveco Daily 4x4?
Otherwise I’m guessing my next best thing would be an older dual cab Landcruiser with tray? My only concern with that is having to go a much older vehicle (which means probably less reliable) and they’re a fair bit smaller for a family of 4 + surfboards + kids stuff etc.
A workaround on size could be to build a trailer also, but there’s something appealing about keeping it as compact as possible, trailers bring their own issues.
Are there any other vehicle options that you might know about?
Is there any mechanics in Australia that you know of who might be able to help shed some light?
Many thanks!

Here’s my general hopes for a vehicle (although I’m aware we have to compromise on some points):
- Spacious 4x4 with high clearance
- Dual cab (2 kids will need child seats in rear)
- Flatbed / utility rear (or at least a rear that I can disassemble to convert into a camper eg. firetruck)
