  • Blending Problem

    Hi all

    I'm new here.

    Got R30 Skyline LD28, I'm running 80%WVO(filtered to 1 micro)+20%Petrol.

    Question:

I put the WVO and Petrol in a 20L container, somehow the WVO and Petrol does not mix well. the bottom end is way way thicker than the top end. this is due to the molecular weight of the petrol is much lighter than the WVO i think. or could it be i should weight few hours after mixing?

So, how do I solve this problem? what do you guys mean by blending?

    Re: Blending Problem

    Hi andyling,

it sounds like you have not mixed the blend well enough. Once mixed together the wvo and ulp should stay blended.

I have samples of all my blends in coke bottles, some are several yeas old and show no signs of seperation.

The only other thing that may cause this is too much HMP[high melt point] fats in your wvo.

If this is the case then it's all about how you filter your wvo and not about the blend.

    God bless froggo.

      Hi, Thanks Mate

I filter the WVO at ambient temperature and normal enviroment, no heating or any thing.

      What's your method of mixing?

        Re: Blending Problem

        Hi andyling,

sorry forgot to say welcome to the forum!

It's a must do to blend in a container and not in your cars fuel tank.

As you are using a 20litre to mix in don't fill it right to the top. The wvo and ulp needs room to move so it can blend.

I mix up 20litres in a 25ltr container and shake the crap out of it. The wvo tends to sink to the bottom so I tip my containers upside down, right way up as part of the mixing.

I let it sit sometimes hours-days. I shake it again before I put in car.

        God bless froggo.

I put the ULP in my drum, add the oil and its mixed.

I have been blending for over 2 1/2 years and have yet to see separation of WVO and ULP or even read of it.
If your getting fallout I would put it down to a couple of possibilities.

1, You oil is wet and this is causing the oil and petrol to either not mix properly or the petrol is mixing and making the water drop out. Make sure any oil you use will pass a HPT.
If the dropout is occurring almost instantly as I take it by your question of should you wait a few hours, I would be definitely thinking it's water.

2, As froggo Mentioned, you may have too much HMP fats in your oil.
Improve your oil processing to eliminate the fats. You can do it the easy way by settling the oil for a couple of months or so or the hard way by filtering it through a disposable shopping bag or a bag filter.

Water or possibly some other cleaner or the like contaminating the oil is my best guess though.
Thanks Dave and Froggo, you guys are very helpful.

1, I think my WVO is dry, because I cook the chips in the pizza shop. the cooker stays on 8hours a day minimun during the week and 12-14 hours a day during the weekend. change oil once a week.

Also, if it's water then, the bottom end should be very thin. but it's thick as WVO and the colour is dark as WVO.

Therefore, I belive it's my mixing. I never mixed it. I just put in the container and give it 30 seconds shake...(dam, I wish I've asked you guys earlier)

2, yes, I went hard way, I filtered the WVO through shopping bag,(I think it's about 5-10 micron people say). then filtered through a big 1 micron bag filter( takes lonnnng time).

In theory my WVO should be Clean and Dry. I need to start shaking the containers as hell. and if that's still not working, then I will come back...

Once again thank you all for your input.

            Re: Blending Problem

If filtering is taking a long time, you can always filter after blending. I'd separate the fat out first though.

The ratio of ULP can vary with the seasons too.

It's as DJ says, put ULP in the drum first, then add veg.

That's all I do too and it stays mixed.
I think if you add the ULP to the oil you would need to shake it up.

                Re: Blending Problem

I tke my oil filtered to 1 micron (ambient tem) and pump it into a 250 litres hot water server. about 140 litres in toal.

I fire this up with 2400 watt element for about 5 hours to get it to 60celsius, then start circulating with a pump and exchaust fanst tp extract any water.

Once this is done i add 10% ULP (put throgh a 1 micron filter back and about 60-80 Diesel/Kero (less if it is Kero). Then put the pump on circulate and let it mix with the pump for an hour or so.

After ciculating these is very litte/free oil at the bottom when i drain out 5 litres.

Bird, I were going to mix WVO with Petrol before filtering.

But then i decide not to because the petrol can evaporate quite bit during few hours, and the major problem is the fire/explosion hazard

Thanks for the add petrol first then add WVO advice.

                      Hi andyling,

oil from the fryer is not always dry.

As Dave suggests most wvo is wet from the fryer, It sounds wierd but it's true.

There are two forms of water in wvo one called free water and the other suspended water.

You need to learn how to do a hot pan test on your wvo.

This test will tell you if your oil is wet or dry.

If you do a search on hot pan test[HPT] you will find all you need to know to test for water in your wvo.

                      God bless froggo.

Dave Cheers, that's alot of writing and Infor.
I will start to check the water content. HPT the emusified water. and I also found the WVO goes through 1 micron bag much easier after been through the shopbag.

I think the reason it has thick fat builds up is because i used it to filter some unfiltered WVO(looks clean).

                        Again Thank you all.

                          Re: Blending Problem

CHeck your shopping bag filters bags have not split on the seams etc. I have been using the same 5 micron then 1 micron filters for 2000 litres of oil, the only time i have had a build up was when one of my bunnings bags split and let a heap of HMPs through - then i saw them coating both of my filter bags and the rate slowing right down.
