Anyone had any experience feeding glycerine to cattle?

    Re: feeding glycerine to cattle

I heard of someone doing it this week, actually. Ask Timorcoco about it. I wouldn't have thought the residual methanol would be much good for their vision among other things and the caustic could also be a bit rough on the digestive tract!

      3DB,
Most mammals do not have the problems Humans have with methanol.

Methanol is often added to aneorobic digesters (biogas plants ) to stimulate the bugs that fart methane. The bugs are
of numerous species, derived from a cows first stomach contents, and enjoy the alcohol.
The studies I've read , easily googled , suggest raw glyc at max 10% of dry weight feed , but ramped up over several weeks.
A mate is trialing a glyc/hay diet on a few cows now , we'll see how they go. They certainly relish the sweet taste !

          Timorcoco, long time no see.
Does your friend neutralise the residual caustic?

            Hi Tony ,
not neutralising the raw biodiesel glycerol by-product .
I have not read of this for glyc cattle-feeding , which I believe is
common in U.S. factory-farms, where it's used as a replacement for molasses.
But those places are certainly not designed to pamper the inmates.
