    Alternative, very fast, wash method.

Having returned from holidays, I set about trying to do on purpose what I achieved by accident as documented in my first batch of Bio.

Created a new batch of biodiesel the standard way. Did 5% pre-wash. Left settle overnight.

Seperated the next morning. [Still not getting proper conversion according to the methonal test ]

Tossed the bio back into the reactor, along with a couple of liters of water. Brought to the boil. Left for a few minutes.

Scooped off a sample of bio from the top and shook it up with some fresh water.

Only a tiny bit of cloudiness in the water visible.

Drained most of the water off the bottom of the reactor, tossed in another liter or so. Brought back to the boil [easy since the oil was still hot] for a couple of minutes.

    Tested again. Clear.

    It works. Yeehaa!!

    Notes.

Soap scum comes to the top with bubbles briefly during heating. Then sinks to bottom when oil gets too hot to support it.

Too much water seems to not be a good thing. About 5 - 10% by volume seems right.

May not be so good if you have no cheap, easy method of heating. I use off-peak electric...

Methonal content should be close to zero after this.

Water content should be fairly low as well. My bio comes out fairly dry.

Still have to experiment with time needed at the boil. Longer could achieve the same effect as changing the water.

    Conclusion

Fast. Easy. Longest part is waiting for it to heat up.

Still better than waiting several days and using heaps of [harder and harder to get] water.

Does it stay crystal clear when cool?

    The Bio? or the water?

    The test water stayed clear.

    *Ducks out to check Bio*

Still luke warm. Still clear... or, clear enough to see the bottom of the drum through 30cm of Bio.

I suspect it will cloud up overnight... due to temperature dropping to 5 deg C or so.

Tell ya what. I'll set it in the sun tomorrow morning and see how it looks at 20 deg.

    Hello kamel

    The biodiesel.
Water in solution is invisible and harmless to your engine (So the theory goes)
Water in suspension causes the biodiesel to cloud and can damage your Injector Pump (So the theory goes)

Warm biodiesel can hold more water in solution than cool biodiesel.
If the biodiesel starts to cloud as it cools this is an indication of:
    A. Water in solution becoming water in suspension
    B. Biodiesel reaching it's cloud point.

Biodiesel should be crystal clear at the lowest temperature it is likely to experience.

Ahh, yes. I know that thanks.

My point in this excercise was to bypass all the tedious washing, washing, washing... without having to go the route of the great unwashed.

Too much time. Too much water. Too much mucking about.

I'm aware that it might not be dry enough for instant use... but thats a minor matter... as drying is a lot less mess than washing.

From memory, the last batch I did stayed clearish [memory not good on this point]... but it got left sitting in an open container for a month before I used it.

It was definitely clear when I poured it into the car.

    *thinks*

I might go grab a sample and chuck it in the fridge... then the freezer. Wonder what the Gel point is...

I've been only running 20 - 30% so far... hasn't been an issue.

It is usually easy to spot the gel point

The thermometer typically will stand straight up in the middle of the container
