  • HCN and biodiesel product

Hi there! I'm newcomer for this group,

I want to ask you guys,
If i have an oil with some prussic acid (HCN), and i'm going to convert it to biodiesel
Is there any side effect to the biodiesel?
Or it will be a toxic pollution when we used it on the machine?
    Thanks before

    Best regards.

    Re: HCN and biodiesel product

I am no chemist but I would suggest that the alkali [NAOH or KOH] used in the transesterifcation would neutralize the acid in the oil. The net result could be that you may need excess Alkali to ensure a complete reaction.

Have a read here : Hydrogen cyanide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Should be enough to convince you to leave it alone!

Ray is right , you need to leave this oil alone. more importantly you need to be far far away from it's source.
I'd be more concerned about where and why the oil has these properties.

Have a read of the article and make up your own mind. In this case the internet is correct.

Holy Dooley. I am no chemist either, but I thought that cyanide was one of the most readily absorbed in the human body toxins you could get. I wouldn't even look at it. Dude, you have a serious waste disposal issue to solve.

                hi michael,
I'm about to make biodiesel from rubber seed oil,
And rubber seed contain high HCN
That's why i need to know, will it be dangerous,
If yes, then maybe i should separate it, but it will be add some cost to the process, lol
